Use cases
- Build a personal knowledge base by creating notebooks, adding sources (articles, PDFs, links), and organizing them with notes and topics
- Search your accumulated knowledge using vector embeddings or text search to find relevant information quickly
- Ask AI questions about your notebook content to synthesize insights and get answers grounded in your sources
- Maintain ongoing research discussions through chat sessions that reference your notebook content
- Organize and manage multiple research projects, each with separate notebooks, sources, and notes
io.github.Epochal-dev/open-notebook MCP server FAQ
It's an MCP server that connects Claude and other AI assistants to Open Notebook, a personal knowledge management system. You can manage notebooks, add content sources, create notes, search, and chat with AI about your knowledge base.
The MCP server itself is open-source. You need to run your own Open Notebook instance (also open-source) locally or remotely.
Install via pip (`pip install open-notebook-mcp`), then add it to your Claude Desktop config at `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` with your Open Notebook URL and optional password.
Optional. If your Open Notebook instance has `APP_PASSWORD` configured, set `OPEN_NOTEBOOK_PASSWORD` in your environment variables.
Python 3.12 or later.
Yes. The server supports both STDIO (local) and Streamable HTTP (remote deployment) transports. Set `MCP_TRANSPORT=streamable-http` for remote use.

# Get a summary of all tools
search_capabilities(query="", detail="summary", limit=50)
# Search for specific functionality
search_capabilities(query="notebook", detail="summary", limit=10)
# Get full details for a specific tool
search_capabilities(query="create_notebook", detail="full", limit=1)
Example Workflows
