TypeDB MCP Server

io.github.typedb/typedb-mcp

Execute TypeQL queries and manage TypeDB databases through natural language with AI assistants.

What is the TypeDB MCP server?

The TypeDB MCP Server is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that enables AI assistants to interact with TypeDB databases. It allows LLMs to execute TypeQL queries, manage databases, and manage users through natural language interfaces.

This server bridges AI assistants like Claude and Cursor with TypeDB, a knowledge graph database. You can query data, create/delete databases, and manage users entirely through conversational prompts, making database operations accessible without writing raw TypeQL.

Tools & capabilities

Tools this server exposes to the agent.

  • Query Execution — Run TypeQL read, write, and schema queries against TypeDB
  • Database Management — List, create, and delete databases on a TypeDB server
  • User Management — List, create, and delete users on a TypeDB server

Use cases

  • Query a knowledge graph database using natural language instead of raw TypeQL
  • Create and manage multiple TypeDB databases programmatically through an AI assistant
  • Define entity schemas and relationships by describing them in conversation
  • Insert and retrieve data from TypeDB without writing database queries manually
  • Automate database administration tasks like user creation and database provisioning

TypeDB MCP server FAQ

What is the TypeDB MCP Server?

It's an MCP server that connects AI assistants to TypeDB databases, enabling query execution, database management, and user administration through natural language.

Is it free?

Yes, the TypeDB MCP Server is open-source and available on Docker Hub at no cost.

How do I install it in Cursor?

Start the Docker container, then add the server configuration to `.cursor/mcp.json` with the URL `http://localhost:8001/mcp`, and restart Cursor.

What authentication is required?

You need TypeDB server credentials (username and password) to run the MCP server, which are passed as environment variables when starting the Docker container.

Do I need a TypeDB server running?

Yes, you must have a TypeDB server instance running and accessible at the address you provide when starting the MCP server.

What TypeQL operations are supported?

The server supports read queries, write queries, and schema definition queries against your TypeDB databases.

TypeDB MCP Server

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that enables AI assistants to interact with TypeDB databases. This allows LLMs to execute TypeQL queries, manage databases, and manage users through natural language.

Available on Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/typedb/typedb-mcp

Features

  • Query Execution: Run TypeQL read, write, and schema queries
  • Database Management: List, create, and delete databases
  • User Management: List, create, and delete users

Running the Server

docker run -p 8001:8001 typedb/typedb-mcp:<version> \
  --typedb-address <address> \
  --typedb-username <username> \
  --typedb-password <password>

If you're running TypeDB server on localhost:

  • replace <address> with http://host.docker.internal:8000 instead of http://localhost:8000
  • on Linux, add --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway

Using with Cursor IDE

  1. Start the MCP server (see above)

  2. Open Cursor Settings → MCP

  3. Add the server configuration. Create or edit .cursor/mcp.json in your project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "typedb": {
      "url": "http://localhost:8001/mcp"
    }
  }
}
  1. Restart Cursor or refresh MCP connections

  2. Start chatting! You can now ask Cursor to:

    • "List all databases"
    • "Create a database called 'mydb'"
    • "Define an entity 'person' with attribute 'name' in database 'mydb'"
    • "Insert a person with name 'Alice'"
    • "Query all persons in the database"

Building from Source

Use podman or Docker to create a Docker image and push it to DockerHub:

podman login docker.io

VERSION=<desired version number>
podman build -t typedb/typedb-mcp:$VERSION .
podman push typedb/typedb-mcp:$VERSION
