fastapi-patterns

affaan-m/ecc

Production-grade FastAPI patterns: project structure, Pydantic v2, dependency injection, async handlers, auth, and testing.

What is fastapi-patterns?

A comprehensive guide to modern FastAPI development covering project layout, configuration management, Pydantic v2 schemas, dependency injection, authentication/authorization, and testing practices. Use this when building scalable, maintainable FastAPI applications with async patterns and transactional service layers.

  • Provides a modular project structure separating routers, models, schemas, and services
  • Demonstrates Pydantic v2 schema validation with custom validators and email validation
  • Implements dependency injection for database sessions and authentication flows
  • Shows async/await patterns for database operations and request handlers
  • Covers JWT-based authentication and role-based authorization with OAuth2
  • Includes transactional service layer pattern for business logic isolation

How to install fastapi-patterns

npx skills add null --skill fastapi-patterns
Prerequisites
  • FastAPI installed
  • SQLAlchemy with async support (sqlalchemy[asyncio])
  • Pydantic v2 and pydantic-settings
  • python-jose for JWT handling
  • httpx and pytest for testing
Claude Code
Cursor
Windsurf
Cline

How to use fastapi-patterns

  1. 1.Review the project structure layout and create directories matching the pattern (app/, tests/, etc.)
  2. 2.Copy the app factory and lifespan configuration from main.py into your application
  3. 3.Set up configuration management using pydantic-settings and create a .env file
  4. 4.Define SQLAlchemy ORM models in the models/ directory
  5. 5.Create Pydantic request/response schemas in schemas/ with v2 validators
  6. 6.Implement dependency injection functions in dependencies.py for database and auth
  7. 7.Build routers in routers/ that use the injected dependencies and service layer
  8. 8.Create a service layer in services/ for business logic and database transactions

Use cases

Good for
  • Building REST APIs with FastAPI that require user authentication and authorization
  • Structuring a new FastAPI project with clear separation of concerns
  • Implementing pagination, filtering, and CRUD operations with async SQLAlchemy
  • Setting up environment-based configuration management with pydantic-settings
  • Creating reusable dependency injection patterns for database and auth across routes
Who it's for
  • Backend developers building production FastAPI applications
  • Teams adopting async Python for web services
  • Developers migrating to Pydantic v2 and modern FastAPI patterns
  • Full-stack engineers setting up scalable API architectures

fastapi-patterns FAQ

When should I use the service layer vs. putting logic directly in routers?

Use the service layer for all business logic, database operations, and validation. Routers should only handle HTTP concerns (request parsing, response formatting, status codes). This keeps code testable and reusable across different endpoints.

How do I handle database transactions across multiple operations?

The service layer receives an AsyncSession dependency. Use async context managers or explicit transaction control within service methods to group related database operations into atomic units.

What's the difference between get_current_user and get_current_active_user?

get_current_user validates the JWT token and retrieves the user from the database. get_current_active_user adds an additional check to ensure the user's is_active flag is True, useful for endpoints requiring active accounts.

How do I test endpoints that require authentication?

In conftest.py, create a test client and override the oauth2_scheme dependency to return a test token. Use pytest fixtures to set up test users and generate valid tokens for authenticated test cases.

Should I use Base.metadata.create_all() in production?

No. The pattern shows it for development/demo convenience only. For production, use Alembic migrations to manage schema changes safely and track version history.

Note on Database Design: Application-level unique handling requires an underlying unique database index (e.g., unique=True on your SQLAlchemy mapping attributes). Without underlying constraints, application layer error-catching cannot safely prevent concurrent race conditions.

Anti-Patterns

# Bad: business logic inside route handlers.
@router.post("/users/")
async def create_user(payload: UserCreate, db: DbDep):
    hashed = bcrypt.hash(payload.password)
    user = User(email=payload.email, hashed_password=hashed)
    db.add(user)
    await db.commit()
    return user

# Good: thin route, transactional service handling.
@router.post("/users/", response_model=UserResponse, status_code=201)
async def create_user(payload: UserCreate, db: DbDep):
    try:
        return await UserService(db).create(payload)
    except DuplicateUserError:
        raise HTTPException(status_code=400, detail="Email already registered")

# Bad: sync DB calls in async routes block the event loop.
@router.get("/items/")
async def list_items(db: Session = Depends(get_db)):
    return db.query(Item).all()

# Good: use async SQLAlchemy executions.
@router.get("/items/")
async def list_items(db: AsyncSession = Depends(get_db)):
    result = await db.execute(select(Item))
    return result.scalars().all()

Best Practices

  • Always declare a typed response_model to prevent accidental PII/data leaks and output clean OpenAPI schemas.
  • Consolidate standard middleware dependency injections via type-aliasing: DbDep = Annotated[AsyncSession, Depends(get_db)].
  • Wrap database mutation boundaries gracefully within transactions inside your service layer, catching structural database errors directly.
  • Parse JWT parameters defensively, expecting potential string/integer cast mismatches from modern payload variations.
  • Enforce deterministic sorting (e.g., .order_by(Model.id)) on all offset/limit paginated endpoints to avoid data skips.
  • Isolate authorization checks from core authentication dependencies to provide precise REST status signals (401 vs 403).
