laravel-tdd
affaan-m/everything-claude-code
Laravel TDD with PHPUnit, Pest, factories, HTTP tests, and Sanctum authentication testing.
What is laravel-tdd?
Comprehensive test-driven development framework for Laravel applications. Use this skill when building new Laravel features, APIs with authentication, or setting up testing infrastructure. Covers unit tests, feature tests, model factories, mocking, and test coverage.
- Write and organize unit and feature tests with PHPUnit and Pest
- Create and use model factories for test data generation
- Test Eloquent models, relationships, scopes, and accessors
- Test HTTP controllers, form requests, and API endpoints
- Mock external services (queues, mail, notifications, HTTP)
- Test Sanctum and Passport authentication flows
How to install laravel-tdd
npx skills add https://github.com/affaan-m/everything-claude-code --skill laravel-tdd- Laravel project with PHPUnit or Pest installed
- Database configured for testing (SQLite in-memory recommended)
- Understanding of Laravel models, migrations, and controllers
How to use laravel-tdd
- 1.Configure phpunit.xml with test suites and environment variables
- 2.Create a base TestCase class with helper methods like actingAsUser()
- 3.Write model factories in database/factories/ for test data
- 4.Write unit tests in tests/Unit/ for models and business logic
- 5.Write feature tests in tests/Feature/ for HTTP endpoints and workflows
- 6.Run tests with phpunit or pest and check coverage
Use cases
- Building new Laravel applications with TDD workflow
- Testing API endpoints with Sanctum authentication
- Writing feature tests for HTTP controllers and form validation
- Testing Eloquent model relationships and database queries
- Mocking external services in unit and feature tests
- Laravel developers practicing test-driven development
- Backend engineers building APIs with authentication
- Teams implementing testing infrastructure in Laravel projects
- Developers testing Eloquent models and relationships
laravel-tdd FAQ
Unit tests (tests/Unit/) test isolated components like models and scopes. Feature tests (tests/Feature/) test full HTTP workflows including authentication, validation, and database state.
Use $this->actingAs($user) in your test to authenticate, or create helper methods like actingAsUser() and actingAsAdmin() in your base TestCase.
Call User::factory()->create() to persist data, ->make() to create without persisting, ->count(n) for multiple records, and chain state methods like ->admin() for variations.
Use Laravel's testing helpers: Mail::fake(), Queue::fake(), Http::fake(), and Notification::fake() to prevent actual calls during tests.
Set APP_ENV=testing, DB_CONNECTION=sqlite with DB_DATABASE=:memory:, MAIL_MAILER=array, QUEUE_CONNECTION=sync, and CACHE_STORE=array in phpunit.xml.

Laravel Testing with TDD
Test-driven development for Laravel applications using PHPUnit, Pest, Laravel factories, and testing helpers.
When to Activate
- Writing new Laravel applications or features
- Implementing API endpoints with Sanctum or Passport authentication
- Testing Eloquent models, relationships, scopes, and accessors
- Setting up testing infrastructure for Laravel projects
- Writing feature tests for HTTP controllers and form requests
- Mocking external services (queues, mail, notifications, HTTP)
TDD Workflow for Laravel
Red-Green-Refactor Cycle
// Step 1: RED — Write a failing test
public function test_a_product_can_be_created(): void
{
$product = Product::factory()->create(['name' => 'Test Product']);
$this->assertDatabaseHas('products', ['name' => 'Test Product']);
}
// Step 2: GREEN — Write the migration, model, and factory
// Step 3: REFACTOR — Improve while keeping tests green

Base TestCase Setup
namespace Tests;
use Illuminate\Foundation\Testing\TestCase as BaseTestCase;
abstract class TestCase extends BaseTestCase
{
protected function setUp(): void
{
parent::setUp();
// Call $this->withoutExceptionHandling() only in tests that
// test non-HTTP exceptions; it suppresses assertStatus() etc.
}
// Helper: Authenticate and return user
protected function actingAsUser(): mixed
{
$user = \App\Models\User::factory()->create();
$this->actingAs($user);
return $user;
}
protected function actingAsAdmin(): mixed
{
$admin = \App\Models\User::factory()->admin()->create();
$this->actingAs($admin);
return $admin;
}
}
Model Factories
// database/factories/UserFactory.php
class UserFactory extends Factory
{
protected static ?string $password = null;
public function definition(): array
{
return [
'name' => fake()->name(),
'email' => fake()->unique()->safeEmail(),
'email_verified_at' => now(),
'password' => static::$password ??= Hash::make('password'),
'remember_token' => Str::random(10),
'role' => 'user',
];
}
public function admin(): static
{
return $this->state(fn (array $attributes) => ['role' => 'admin']);
}
public function unverified(): static
{
return $this->state(fn (array $attributes) => ['email_verified_at' => null]);
}
}
// database/factories/ProductFactory.php
class ProductFactory extends Factory
{
public function definition(): array
{
return [
'name' => fake()->unique()->words(3, true),
'slug' => fn (array $attrs) => Str::slug($attrs['name']),

Using Factories
$user = User::factory()->create();
$admin = User::factory()->admin()->create();
$product = Product::factory()->create(['user_id' => $user->id]);
$products = Product::factory()->count(10)->create();
$draft = Product::factory()->make(); // Not persisted
// With relationships
$user = User::factory()->has(Product::factory()->count(3))->create();
// Sequences
User::factory()->count(3)->sequence(
['role' => 'admin'], ['role' => 'editor'], ['role' => 'user'],
)->create();

Testing Best Practices
DO
- Use factories over manual
create()calls - One logical assertion per test
- Descriptive names:
test_guests_cannot_create_products - Test edge cases and authorization boundaries
- Mock external services with
Http::fake(),Mail::fake() - Use
RefreshDatabasefor clean state
DON'T
- Don't test Laravel internals (trust the framework)
- Don't make tests dependent on each other
- Don't over-mock — mock only service boundaries
- Don't test private methods — test through the public interface
- Don't couple tests to HTML structure
Quick Reference
| Pattern | Usage |
|---|---|
RefreshDatabase | Reset database between tests |
$this->actingAs($user) | Authenticate as user |
$this->withToken($token) | Bearer token auth for APIs |
Model::factory()->create() | Create model with factory |
Model::factory()->count(5)->create() | Create multiple records |
Http::fake([...]) | Mock HTTP calls |
Mail::fake() | Trap sent mail |
Notification::fake() | Trap sent notifications |
Queue::fake() | Trap queued jobs |
Event::fake() | Trap dispatched events |
Storage::fake('public') | Trap file operations |
assertDatabaseHas | Assert DB row exists |
assertSoftDeleted | Assert soft-delete |
assertSessionHasErrors | Assert validation errors |
assertForbidden | Assert 403 status |
