A motion library for React and Next.js that implements animations, transitions, and motion patterns with emphasis on guiding attention, communicating state, and preserving spatial continuity. Use it when adding purposeful motion to interactive components, state transitions, and navigation flows.

How to use motion-ui
- 1.Import motion and AnimatePresence from motion/react (or framer-motion if using legacy)
- 2.Define motion tokens in a shared file (duration, easing, distance) for consistency across animations
- 3.Use motion.div and other motion components with initial, animate, and transition props for basic animations
- 4.Apply useReducedMotion hook to respect user accessibility preferences and disable transforms when needed

motion-ui FAQ
Use motion/react for new projects. framer-motion is the legacy import path. Never mix both in the same project as they have conflicting internal schedulers. Check your package.json to see which one your project uses.
Avoid motion when it is purely decorative, reduces usability or clarity, or negatively impacts performance. Motion should guide attention, communicate state, or preserve spatial continuity—if it does none of these, remove it.
Use the device adaptation heuristic that checks navigator.deviceMemory and navigator.hardwareConcurrency. Reduce animation duration (e.g., 0.2s instead of 0.4s) on devices with ≤2GB memory or ≤4 CPU cores.
Animate only transform and opacity, which are GPU-accelerated. Avoid animating width, height, top, or left as these trigger layout recalculations. Responsiveness is prioritized over smoothness.
Always specify the mode prop explicitly. Use mode='wait' for modals and page transitions (exit completes before enter), mode='popLayout' for dismissible lists (exiting element removed from flow), and mode='sync' only when enter/exit overlap is intentional.

Do not mix. Mixing causes conflicting internal schedulers and broken AnimatePresence contexts — components from one package will not coordinate exit animations with components from the other.

Device Adaptation
The heuristic combines CPU core count and available memory for a more reliable signal. deviceMemory is available on Chrome/Android; the fallback covers Safari and Firefox.

Why avoid
layouton large containers? Framer's layout animation usestransformto reconcile positions, but on elements that span the full viewport or trigger deep reflow, the measurement cost causes visible jank and CLS. Prefer CSS Grid/Flexbox transitions or coordinate withlayoutIdon specific child elements only.

Always specify mode explicitly — the default ("sync") runs enter and exit simultaneously, which causes visual overlap in most UI patterns.
