localization

appeeky/aso-skills

Expand your app to international markets with localized App Store listings and market-prioritized strategies.

What is localization?

Localization helps you adapt your App Store presence for new geographic markets by translating and culturally customizing metadata, keywords, and visuals. Use this when planning to enter new countries, expand revenue, or optimize for specific languages and regions.

  • Assess current localization status and identify target markets based on size, competition, ARPU, and strategic fit
  • Prioritize markets using a weighted framework (Tier 1 includes US, UK, Germany, Japan, France, South Korea, China, Brazil)
  • Research local keywords per market—avoiding direct translation mistakes by understanding how locals actually search
  • Localize metadata (title, subtitle, keywords, description, screenshots, preview video) with cultural adaptation
  • Provide market-specific localization plans with keyword rankings, effort estimates, and expected impact
  • Monitor keyword performance and conversion rates by country post-launch

How to install localization

npx skills add https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills --skill localization
Prerequisites
  • App ID for your app on the target App Store(s)
  • Clarity on whether your app itself is localized (UI/content) or only the store listing needs localization
  • Budget decision: professional translation, native-speaker review, or AI-assisted approach

How to use localization

  1. 1.Gather your app's current App Store listing and any existing localization context (check app-marketing-context.md if available)
  2. 2.Identify 3–5 target markets using the Tier 1 and Tier 2 market tables, evaluated on market size, competition, effort, ARPU, and strategic fit
  3. 3.Run keyword-research skill separately for each target market—do not translate English keywords directly
  4. 4.Create a localization plan per market with localized title, subtitle, keywords, and cultural adaptation notes
  5. 5.Translate and adapt metadata (description, screenshots, preview video) using native speakers with ASO knowledge, not just translators
  6. 6.Submit localized metadata to each App Store and monitor keyword rankings and conversion rates weekly post-launch

Use cases

Good for
  • Expanding a productivity app from English-speaking markets into German, French, and Japanese to capture high-ARPU regions
  • Localizing an e-commerce app's App Store listing for Brazil and Mexico, including currency symbols and local payment methods in screenshots
  • Researching and adapting keywords for a fitness app in South Korea, where local search terms differ significantly from English equivalents
  • Planning a phased rollout across Tier 2 markets (Spain, Italy, Netherlands) with effort and ROI estimates
  • Updating screenshots and promotional text for seasonal campaigns in different regions (e.g., holiday promotions)
Who it's for
  • App developers and publishers planning international expansion
  • Product managers evaluating which new markets to enter
  • ASO (App Store Optimization) specialists managing multi-market campaigns
  • Growth teams optimizing revenue across geographic regions

localization FAQ

Should I translate my English keywords directly into other languages?

No—this is the biggest localization mistake. Keywords must be researched locally for each market. For example, 'budget tracker' becomes 'Haushaltsbuch' (household book) in German and '家計簿' (household ledger) in Japanese. Use the keyword-research skill for each target market separately.

Which markets should I prioritize first?

Start with Tier 1 markets (US, UK, Germany, Japan, France, South Korea, China, Brazil, Canada, Australia) based on market size, competition, effort, ARPU, and strategic fit. Evaluate each using the weighted framework provided in the skill.

Do I need to localize my app itself or just the App Store listing?

This skill focuses on App Store listing localization (metadata, keywords, screenshots). Confirm whether your app's UI and content are also localized, as that affects translation scope and effort.

How much effort does localization typically take?

Effort varies by market and language. The skill provides effort estimates (hours/days) per market. Metadata localization is faster; full description and screenshot adaptation takes longer. Budget for native-speaker review, not just machine translation.

How do I know if localization is working?

Monitor keyword rankings weekly in each market, track conversion rates by country, and compare download trends before and after launch. Use this data to iterate on metadata and prioritize future markets.

App Store Localization

You are an expert in App Store internationalization and localization strategy. Your goal is to help the user expand to new markets by localizing their App Store presence effectively.

Initial Assessment

  1. Check for app-marketing-context.md — read it for current markets and languages
  2. Ask for the App ID (to see current localizations)
  3. Ask: Is the app itself localized (UI, content) or just the store listing?
  4. Ask: Which markets are they considering?
  5. Ask: Budget — professional translation or AI-assisted?

Localization Checklist

Metadata Localization

For each target market:

  • Title (30 chars) — Localized with market-specific keywords
  • Subtitle (30 chars) — Localized with local keywords
  • Keyword field (100 chars) — Completely new research per market
  • Description (4000 chars) — Translated and culturally adapted
  • Promotional text (170 chars) — Localized for local events/seasons
  • What's New — Translated for each update
  • Screenshots — Text overlays translated, culturally appropriate imagery
  • App Preview Video — Subtitles or localized version

Critical: Keywords Are NOT Translations

The biggest localization mistake: Translating English keywords directly.

Instead:

  1. Run keyword-research for each target market separately
  2. Understand how locals search (different terms, different intent)
  3. Use local autocomplete suggestions
  4. Check what local competitors use in their metadata

Example:

  • English keyword: "budget tracker"
  • German: "Haushaltsbuch" (household book) — NOT "Budget Tracker"
  • Japanese: "家計簿" (household ledger) — completely different concept
  • Spanish: "control de gastos" (expense control) — different framing

Cultural Adaptation

ElementWhat to check
ScreenshotsCurrency symbols, date formats, number formats
ColorsCultural color associations (red = luck in China, danger in West)
ImageryDiverse representation, culturally appropriate
ToneFormal vs informal varies by culture
FeaturesHighlight features relevant to local needs
Social proofUse local press, local user counts if possible
PricingLocal pricing expectations (purchasing power parity)

Localization Workflow

Phase 1: Research (per market)

  1. Analyze top 10 apps in your category in the target market
  2. Run keyword research with local seed terms
  3. Identify local competitors and their positioning
  4. Understand local App Store trends

Phase 2: Translation & Adaptation

For metadata (title, subtitle, keywords):

  • Use native speakers with ASO knowledge (not just translators)
  • Provide context: "This is an App Store title, must include [keyword]"
  • Review with keyword data — does the translation include high-volume terms?

For description:

  • Professional translation with cultural adaptation
  • Not word-for-word — adapt examples, references, humor
  • Maintain the same persuasive structure

For screenshots:

  • Translate text overlays
  • Adjust UI language if app is localized
  • Consider local design preferences

Phase 3: Launch & Monitor

  1. Submit localized metadata
  2. Monitor keyword rankings in each market (weekly)
  3. Track conversion rate by country
  4. Iterate based on performance data
