bmad-build

bmad-code-org/bmad-method

Turns implementation work into working code, reviewed and verified.

What is bmad-build?

bmad-build executes feature development, bug fixes, and meaningful changes end-to-end with code review and verification. Use it when delegating substantial implementation work; skip routine maintenance like formatting or configuration edits.

  • Executes implementation work (features, bug fixes, stories) into working code
  • Performs code review and verification before completion
  • Supports workflow routing (oneshot or full) for different development modes
  • Allows review selection (none, quick, or thorough) to control verification depth
  • Integrates with BMad project setup via render_skill.py script
  • Respects project root and skill directory paths for proper execution

How to install bmad-build

npx skills add https://github.com/bmad-code-org/bmad-method --skill bmad-build
Prerequisites
  • BMad must be set up in the project (check for _bmad/scripts/render_skill.py)
  • uv package manager must be available
  • Absolute paths to project root and skill directory required
  • If BMad is not set up, run the bmad skill's setup first

How to use bmad-build

  1. 1.Delegate a feature, bug fix, or meaningful change to the agent
  2. 2.Optionally specify a workflow route (oneshot or full) if needed
  3. 3.Optionally specify a review level (none, quick, or thorough) if needed
  4. 4.The skill will run the render_skill.py command with appropriate parameters
  5. 5.Read and follow the workflow.md instruction printed to stdout
  6. 6.The agent executes the workflow and delivers reviewed, verified code

Use cases

Good for
  • Delegating a feature story to be fully implemented and reviewed
  • Fixing a reported bug with verification that the fix works
  • Implementing a meaningful change from an issue link or description
  • Running explicit BMAD requests for structured development workflows
  • Completing a user-directed feature with code review before merge
Who it's for
  • Development teams using BMad methodology
  • Developers delegating implementation work to AI agents
  • Projects with established BMad setup and verification workflows
  • Teams wanting automated code review and verification on feature work

bmad-build FAQ

When should I use bmad-build vs. doing the work myself?

Use bmad-build when delegating substantial implementation work like features, bug fixes, or meaningful changes. Skip it for obvious low-risk maintenance such as typo fixes, formatting-only edits, or configuration hygiene.

What happens if BMad is not set up in my project?

The skill will detect the missing setup and offer to run the bmad skill's setup first, installing BMad if needed, then retry the command.

Can I control how thorough the review is?

Yes. Append --set workflow.review=<value> with none, quick, or thorough to control review depth.

What if the render_skill.py script fails or uv is unavailable?

The skill will report the command output and halt without running workflow source directly, ensuring safe error handling.

Do I need to specify workflow.route and workflow.review every time?

No. Both are optional. If not specified, the workflow uses its defaults. Only append them when you want to override the default behavior.

name: bmad-build description: 'Turns implementation work into working code, reviewed and verified. Use when the user delegates a feature, story, bug fix, or meaningful change; a bare story or issue link counts. Skip obvious, low-risk mechanical maintenance such as small ignore-file, typo-only, formatting-only, or configuration-hygiene edits. Explicit BMAD requests always qualify. Do not volunteer for user-directed interactive edits or version-control operations that only record existing work.'

Run the following command exactly once without changing the current working directory. Replace {project-root} with the absolute path to the project root and {skill-root} with the absolute path to this skill's directory:

uv run --no-cache "{project-root}/_bmad/scripts/render_skill.py" --project-root "{project-root}" --skill "{skill-root}"
  • When the invocation names a route (oneshot or full), append --set workflow.route=<value> to the command.
  • When the invocation names a review selection (none, quick, or thorough; "skip review" or "no review" mean none), append --set workflow.review=<value> to the command.
  • On success, read and follow the one absolute workflow.md instruction printed to stdout.
  • If the script is not found, BMad is not set up here. Offer to run the bmad skill's setup, installing bmad first if you do not have it (npx skills add bmad-code-org/BMAD-METHOD --skill bmad), then run the command above once more.
  • On any other failure (including uv being unavailable), report the command output and HALT. Do not run any workflow source directly.
