threejs-postprocessing

cloudai-x/threejs-skills

Add bloom, DOF, color grading, and screen-space effects to Three.js scenes via EffectComposer.

What is threejs-postprocessing?

Three.js post-processing framework for applying visual effects like bloom, depth of field, anti-aliasing, and color grading. Use when you need to enhance rendered scenes with screen-space effects, glow, blur, or custom shader passes.

  • Chain multiple post-processing passes (bloom, DOF, SSAO, FXAA, SMAA, film grain, vignette, pixelation, glitch, halftone, outlines)
  • Apply selective bloom to specific objects using layer masking
  • Adjust effect parameters at runtime (strength, threshold, radius, focus distance)
  • Compose effects in order with EffectComposer and render to screen instead of direct renderer
  • Handle window resize and pixel ratio scaling for effects
  • Support color correction, gamma correction, and custom shader passes

How to use threejs-postprocessing

  1. 1.Import EffectComposer and RenderPass from three/addons/postprocessing
  2. 2.Create an EffectComposer instance with your renderer
  3. 3.Add a RenderPass as the first pass to render the scene
  4. 4.Import and add desired effect passes (UnrealBloomPass, BokehPass, etc.) in order
  5. 5.Set the last pass's renderToScreen property to true
  6. 6.Replace renderer.render() with composer.render() in your animation loop
  7. 7.Update composer.setSize() on window resize alongside camera and renderer updates
  8. 8.Adjust effect uniforms at runtime to fine-tune appearance

Use cases

Good for
  • Add glowing bloom effect to emissive materials or UI elements
  • Create depth-of-field blur focused on specific objects in the scene
  • Apply anti-aliasing (FXAA/SMAA) for smoother edges without MSAA overhead
  • Combine multiple effects (bloom + vignette + film grain) for cinematic look
  • Highlight or outline selected objects with OutlinePass
Who it's for
  • 3D graphics developers building interactive scenes
  • Game developers adding visual polish and effects
  • Creative technologists creating immersive experiences
  • Developers needing color grading or tone mapping
  • Anyone implementing selective object highlighting or glow

threejs-postprocessing FAQ

Why use EffectComposer instead of direct renderer.render()?

EffectComposer renders to intermediate textures, allowing multiple passes to process the image sequentially. This enables effects like bloom, DOF, and color grading that require reading and modifying the rendered output.

How do I apply bloom only to certain objects?

Use Three.js Layers: enable a specific layer on objects you want to bloom, then in your render loop swap non-blooming objects to a dark material before the bloom pass, then restore their original materials.

What's the performance impact of post-processing?

Each pass adds GPU overhead. Start with essential effects (FXAA, bloom) and profile. SSAO and BokehPass are more expensive; consider resolution scaling or adjusting quality parameters (kernelRadius, maxblur) on lower-end devices.

Do I need to handle resize differently with EffectComposer?

Yes. Call both renderer.setSize() and composer.setSize() on resize. For effects like FXAA that use resolution uniforms, update those uniforms too.

Can I create custom post-processing effects?

Yes, use ShaderPass with custom vertex/fragment shaders, or extend existing passes. The SKILL.md examples show ShaderPass with built-in shaders like VignetteShader and ColorCorrectionShader.

Combining Multiple Effects

import { FXAAShader } from "three/addons/shaders/FXAAShader.js";
import { VignetteShader } from "three/addons/shaders/VignetteShader.js";
import { GammaCorrectionShader } from "three/addons/shaders/GammaCorrectionShader.js";

const composer = new EffectComposer(renderer);

// 1. Render scene
composer.addPass(new RenderPass(scene, camera));

// 2. Bloom
const bloomPass = new UnrealBloomPass(
  new THREE.Vector2(window.innerWidth, window.innerHeight),
  0.5,
  0.4,
  0.85,
);
composer.addPass(bloomPass);

// 3. Vignette
const vignettePass = new ShaderPass(VignetteShader);
vignettePass.uniforms["offset"].value = 0.95;
vignettePass.uniforms["darkness"].value = 1.0;
composer.addPass(vignettePass);

// 4. Gamma correction
composer.addPass(new ShaderPass(GammaCorrectionShader));

// 5. Anti-aliasing (always last before output)
const fxaaPass = new ShaderPass(FXAAShader);
fxaaPass.uniforms["resolution"].value.set(
  1 / window.innerWidth,
  1 / window.innerHeight,
);
composer.addPass(fxaaPass);

Render to Texture

// Create render target
const renderTarget = new THREE.WebGLRenderTarget(512, 512);

// Render scene to target
renderer.setRenderTarget(renderTarget);
renderer.render(scene, camera);
renderer.setRenderTarget(null);

// Use texture
const texture = renderTarget.texture;
otherMaterial.map = texture;

Multi-Pass Rendering

// Multiple composers for different scenes/layers
const bgComposer = new EffectComposer(renderer);
bgComposer.addPass(new RenderPass(bgScene, camera));

const fgComposer = new EffectComposer(renderer);
fgComposer.addPass(new RenderPass(fgScene, camera));
fgComposer.addPass(bloomPass);

// Combine in render loop
function animate() {
  // Render background without clearing
  renderer.autoClear = false;
  renderer.clear();

  bgComposer.render();

  // Render foreground over it
  renderer.clearDepth();
  fgComposer.render();
}

WebGPU Post-Processing (Three.js r150+)

import { postProcessing } from "three/addons/nodes/Nodes.js";
import { pass, bloom, dof } from "three/addons/nodes/Nodes.js";

// Using node-based system
const scenePass = pass(scene, camera);
const bloomNode = bloom(scenePass, 0.5, 0.4, 0.85);

const postProcessing = new THREE.PostProcessing(renderer);
postProcessing.outputNode = bloomNode;

// Render
function animate() {
  postProcessing.render();
}

Performance Tips

  1. Limit passes: Each pass adds a full-screen render
  2. Lower resolution: Use smaller render targets for blur passes
  3. Disable unused effects: Toggle passes on/off
  4. Use FXAA over MSAA: Less expensive anti-aliasing
  5. Profile with DevTools: Check GPU usage
// Disable pass
bloomPass.enabled = false;

// Reduce bloom resolution
const bloomPass = new UnrealBloomPass(
  new THREE.Vector2(window.innerWidth / 2, window.innerHeight / 2),
  strength,
  radius,
  threshold,
);

// Only apply effects in high-performance scenarios
const isMobile = /iPhone|iPad|Android/i.test(navigator.userAgent);
if (!isMobile) {
  composer.addPass(expensivePass);
}

Handle Resize

function onWindowResize() {
  const width = window.innerWidth;
  const height = window.innerHeight;
  const pixelRatio = renderer.getPixelRatio();

  camera.aspect = width / height;
  camera.updateProjectionMatrix();

  renderer.setSize(width, height);
  composer.setSize(width, height);

  // Update pass-specific resolutions
  if (fxaaPass) {
    fxaaPass.material.uniforms["resolution"].value.set(
      1 / (width * pixelRatio),
      1 / (height * pixelRatio),
    );
  }

  if (bloomPass) {
    bloomPass.resolution.set(width, height);
  }
}

window.addEventListener("resize", onWindowResize);
