What is skill-lookup?
This skill enables searching and installing reusable AI agent components from the prompts.chat skill registry. Use it when you need to find capabilities to extend Claude, discover skills by keyword or category, or install skills into your local skill directory.
- Search skills by keyword, category, or tag using the prompts.chat MCP registry
- Retrieve full skill metadata and file contents for any skill by ID
- Install skills by creating the proper directory structure and saving all files

How to install skill-lookup

- 1.Call search_skills with your query (and optionally category or tag filters) to find skills
- 2.Review the search results showing title, description, author, and file list
- 3.Identify the skill you want and note its ID
- 4.Call get_skill with that ID to retrieve all file contents
- 5.The skill will be installed to .claude/skills/{slug}/ with all necessary files
- 6.Verify the SKILL.md frontmatter is intact to confirm successful installation

Use search_skills with a query string (e.g., 'code review'), and optionally filter by category (e.g., 'coding') or tag. Results show title, description, author, and file list.
The skill files are saved to .claude/skills/{slug}/ including SKILL.md and any reference docs or helper scripts. The installation is verified by reading back the SKILL.md frontmatter.
Yes. search_skills accepts optional category and tag parameters to narrow results (e.g., category='automation', tag='python').
Search broadly first, then consider creating a custom skill. The skill-lookup tool always searches before suggesting you build your own.
The default limit is 10 results; you can request up to 50 per search.

Workflow
- Search for skills matching the user's request using
search_skills - Present results with title, description, author, and file list
- If the user picks a skill, retrieve it with
get_skillto get all files - Install by saving files to
.claude/skills/{slug}/and verify the SKILL.md exists - Confirm installation and explain what the skill does and when it activates

How to Search for Skills
Call search_skills with:
query: The search keywords from the user's requestlimit: Number of results (default 10, max 50)category: Filter by category slug (e.g., "coding", "automation")tag: Filter by tag slug

How to Get a Skill
Call get_skill with:
id: The skill ID
Returns the skill metadata and all file contents:
- SKILL.md (main instructions)
- Reference documentation
- Helper scripts
- Configuration files
How to Install a Skill
When the user asks to install a skill:
- Call
get_skillto retrieve all files - Create the directory
.claude/skills/{slug}/ - Save each file to the appropriate location:
SKILL.md→.claude/skills/{slug}/SKILL.md- Other files →
.claude/skills/{slug}/{filename}
- Read back
SKILL.mdto verify the frontmatter is intact

- Always search before suggesting the user create their own skill
- Present search results in a readable format with file counts
- When installing, confirm the skill was saved successfully
