sentry-ruby-sdk FAQ

Do I need to install sentry-rails if I'm using Rails?

Yes. Install both sentry-ruby and sentry-rails. The sentry-rails gem auto-instruments Rails controllers, ActiveRecord, ActiveJob, and ActionMailer.

What if I'm using OpenTelemetry tracing already?

The skill detects OpenTelemetry and recommends using Sentry's OTLP integration instead of native tracing. Set config.otlp.enabled = true and skip traces_sample_rate.

Can I migrate from Honeybadger or Rollbar to Sentry?

Yes. The skill detects competitor gems and loads a migration guide that shows how to remove the old gem and configure Sentry as a replacement.

What's the performance impact of tracing?

Set traces_sample_rate to 0.05–0.2 in production to sample 5–20% of transactions. In development, 1.0 (100%) is safe.

Do I need to enable metrics?

Metrics are enabled by default and cost nothing. They're recommended if you have Sidekiq, Yabeda, or existing metric libraries (StatsD, Prometheus).

  • Competitor detected (appsignal, honeybadger, bugsnag, rollbar, airbrake) → load ${SKILL_ROOT}/references/migration.md first; delete the competitor initializer as part of migration
  • Sentry already present → skip to Phase 2 to configure features
