Deep security review patterns for Convex authorization, data access, action isolation, rate limiting, and sensitive operations
What is convex-security-audit?
Comprehensive security audit skill for Convex applications. Provides patterns and code examples for reviewing authorization logic, enforcing data access boundaries, isolating external API calls, implementing rate limiting, and protecting sensitive operations. Use this when building or auditing Convex backends for security vulnerabilities.
- Review and implement role-based access control (RBAC) with permission hierarchies
- Audit data access boundaries to ensure users only see authorized data
- Isolate external API calls and protect sensitive credentials in actions
- Implement rate limiting to prevent abuse and unauthorized access
- Protect critical operations with proper authentication and authorization checks
- Verify ownership and access levels before returning sensitive data
How to install convex-security-audit
npx skills add https://github.com/waynesutton/convexskills --skill convex-security-audit- Convex project set up and initialized
- Understanding of Convex queries, mutations, and actions
- Familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts
How to use convex-security-audit
- 1.Review the Authorization Logic Audit section for RBAC patterns matching your role structure
- 2.Examine Data Access Boundaries examples to audit your query handlers for ownership checks
- 3.Check Action Isolation patterns to secure external API calls and protect credentials
- 4.Implement rate limiting patterns from the Rate Limiting Audit section
- 5.Apply Sensitive Operations protection to critical functions like payments or admin actions
- 6.Test each security pattern with both authorized and unauthorized access attempts
Use cases
- Auditing an existing Convex application for authorization vulnerabilities
- Implementing role-based access control for multi-tenant applications
- Securing external API integrations to prevent credential exposure
- Protecting sensitive operations like payments or admin functions
- Enforcing data isolation between users in shared document scenarios
- Convex backend developers
- Security engineers reviewing Convex applications
- Full-stack developers building multi-user applications
- Teams implementing role-based access control
- Developers integrating external APIs securely
convex-security-audit FAQ
No. Never expose API keys in responses. Store them in environment variables and use them only server-side. Log API usage for audit trails instead of returning sensitive details.
Always filter queries by the authenticated user's ID. Use withIndex to efficiently query by userId, and verify ownership before returning sensitive items. Return null rather than revealing whether an item exists if access is denied.
Public actions are exposed to clients and must verify authentication. Internal actions (marked with underscore prefix) are only callable from other server functions and should handle sensitive operations like payments or credential management.
Check visibility (public/private), verify ownership, then query an access control table for shared permissions. Return the appropriate access level so clients know what operations are allowed.
Don't expose external API error details to clients. Log the error server-side for debugging, but return a generic error message to prevent information leakage.

}
return await query

},
});
Best Practices
- Never run
npx convex deployunless explicitly instructed - Never run any git commands unless explicitly instructed
- Implement defense in depth (multiple security layers)
- Log all sensitive operations for audit trails
- Use confirmation codes for destructive actions
- Rate limit all user-facing endpoints
- Never expose internal API keys or errors
- Review access patterns regularly
Common Pitfalls
- Single point of failure - Implement multiple auth checks
- Missing audit logs - Log all sensitive operations
- Trusting client data - Always validate server-side
- Exposing error details - Sanitize error messages
- No rate limiting - Always implement rate limits
