Neural search via Exa MCP for web, code, companies, and people research.

What is exa-search?

Exa Search provides AI-powered neural search across web content, code repositories, company information, and professional profiles. Use it when you need current information, code examples, technical documentation, or background research on organizations and people.

  • Search the web for current news, facts, and information with neural ranking
  • Find code examples and API documentation from GitHub, Stack Overflow, and technical sites
  • Research companies, funding, valuations, and competitive intelligence
  • Look up professional profiles and people in specific domains
  • Support deep technical research with configurable result depth and token limits
  • Use search operators (site:, quoted phrases, intitle:) to refine queries

How to install exa-search

npx skills add null --skill exa-search
Prerequisites
  • Exa MCP server configured in ~/.claude.json
  • EXA_API_KEY environment variable set with a valid Exa API key from exa.ai

How to use exa-search

  1. 1.Configure the Exa MCP server by adding exa-web-search to ~/.claude.json with your EXA_API_KEY
  2. 2.Use web_search_exa(query, numResults) for general web searches, news, and company lookups
  3. 3.Use get_code_context_exa(query, tokensNum) to find code examples and technical documentation
  4. 4.Combine both tools for comprehensive research: web search for context, code search for implementation details
  5. 5.Apply search operators (site:, quoted phrases, intitle:) to narrow and focus results

Use cases

Good for
  • Finding the latest Node.js or framework features and release notes
  • Discovering code patterns and error-handling examples in Rust, Python, or other languages
  • Researching company funding rounds, valuations, and market positioning
  • Locating AI safety researchers or professionals on LinkedIn and similar platforms
  • Conducting comprehensive technical deep dives on emerging technologies like WebAssembly
Who it's for
  • Software developers needing code examples and API documentation

  • Product managers gathering company and industry intelligence
  • Engineers performing technical due diligence or background research
  • Anyone needing current web information beyond training data cutoffs

exa-search FAQ

What's the difference between web_search_exa and get_code_context_exa?

web_search_exa searches general web content, news, and company information; get_code_context_exa specifically targets code repositories, API docs, and technical examples from GitHub, Stack Overflow, and documentation sites.

How do I control the amount of content returned?

Use numResults (default 8) for web_search_exa to control result count, and tokensNum (1000-50000, default 5000) for get_code_context_exa to control content depth.

Can I search for specific people or companies?

Yes. Use the category parameter (e.g., category: 'company') for company research, or use site-specific operators like 'site:linkedin.com/in' to target professional profiles.

What does 'livecrawl' do?

The livecrawl parameter (default 'fallback') controls whether Exa crawls live web content when needed; it ensures fresher results for rapidly changing information.

Is this skill drift-prone?

Yes. Exa MCP tool names, parameters, and account limits can change. Verify the current Exa documentation and exposed tool surface before relying on specific search modes or categories.

Exa Search

Drift-prone skill. Exa MCP tool names, parameters, and account limits can change. Confirm the exposed tool surface and current Exa docs before relying on a specific search mode, category, or livecrawl behavior.

Neural search for web content, code, companies, and people via the Exa MCP server.

When to Activate

  • User needs current web information or news
  • Searching for code examples, API docs, or technical references
  • Researching companies, competitors, or market players
  • Finding professional profiles or people in a domain
  • Running background research for any development task
  • User says "search for", "look up", "find", or "what's the latest on"

MCP Requirement

Exa MCP server must be configured. Add to ~/.claude.json:

"exa-web-search": {
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "exa-mcp-server"],
  "env": { "EXA_API_KEY": "YOUR_EXA_API_KEY_HERE" }
}

Get an API key at exa.ai. This repo's current Exa setup documents the tool surface exposed here: web_search_exa and get_code_context_exa. If your Exa server exposes additional tools, verify their exact names before depending on them in docs or prompts.

Core Tools

web_search_exa

General web search for current information, news, or facts.

web_search_exa(query: "latest AI developments 2026", numResults: 5)

Parameters:

ParamTypeDefaultNotes
querystringrequiredSearch query
numResultsnumber8Number of results
typestringautoSearch mode
livecrawlstringfallbackPrefer live crawling when needed
categorystringnoneOptional focus such as company or research paper

get_code_context_exa

Find code examples and documentation from GitHub, Stack Overflow, and docs sites.

get_code_context_exa(query: "Python asyncio patterns", tokensNum: 3000)

Parameters:

ParamTypeDefaultNotes
querystringrequiredCode or API search query
tokensNumnumber5000Content tokens (1000-50000)

Usage Patterns

Quick Lookup

web_search_exa(query: "Node.js 22 new features", numResults: 3)

Code Research

get_code_context_exa(query: "Rust error handling patterns Result type", tokensNum: 3000)

Company or People Research

web_search_exa(query: "Vercel funding valuation 2026", numResults: 3, category: "company")
web_search_exa(query: "site:linkedin.com/in AI safety researchers Anthropic", numResults: 5)

Technical Deep Dive

web_search_exa(query: "WebAssembly component model status and adoption", numResults: 5)
get_code_context_exa(query: "WebAssembly component model examples", tokensNum: 4000)

Tips

  • Use web_search_exa for current information, company lookups, and broad discovery
  • Use search operators like site:, quoted phrases, and intitle: to narrow results
  • Lower tokensNum (1000-2000) for focused code snippets, higher (5000+) for comprehensive context
  • Use get_code_context_exa when you need API usage or code examples rather than general web pages
