No. Do NOT use loading="lazy" on above-the-fold or LCP images—it harms LCP scores. Use loading="lazy" only on below-fold images. Use fetchpriority="high" on LCP images instead.
Use WebP (97%+ support) or AVIF (92%+ support) as primary formats with JPEG/PNG fallbacks via <picture> element. JPEG XL is emerging but not yet practical for web deployment.
Thumbnails: <50KB (warning >100KB, critical >200KB). Content images: <100KB (warning >200KB, critical >500KB). Hero/banner: <200KB (warning >300KB, critical >700KB).
Use srcset with multiple sizes (e.g., 400w, 800w, 1200w) and sizes attribute matching layout breakpoints. Include width/height attributes to prevent CLS.
Native (loading="lazy" attribute), Perfmatters plugin, EWWW Image Optimizer, generic JS (lazysizes, vanilla-lazyload), or none. The skill reports which method is used so you know if JS-based lazy-loading is intentional.

- Includes relevant keywords where natural, not keyword-stuffed
- Length: 10-125 characters

Use progressive enhancement with the most efficient format first:

JPEG XL: Emerging Format
In November 2025, Google's Chromium team reversed its 2022 decision and announced it will restore JPEG XL support in Chrome using a Rust-based decoder. The implementation is feature-complete but not yet in Chrome stable. JPEG XL offers lossless JPEG recompression (~20% savings with zero quality loss) and competitive lossy compression. Not yet practical for web deployment, but worth monitoring for future adoption.

When auditing image SEO, report lazy_method alongside loading so users know
whether their site is using a JS-driven lazy-loader (in which case the native
loading="lazy" attribute is intentionally absent — that is not a regression).
fetchpriority="high" for LCP Images
Add fetchpriority="high" to your hero/LCP image to prioritize its download in the browser's network queue:

Critical: Do NOT lazy-load above-the-fold/LCP images. Using loading="lazy" on LCP images directly harms LCP scores. Reserve loading="lazy" for below-the-fold images only.

Add decoding="async" to non-LCP images to prevent image decoding from blocking the main thread:

Optimize image files for SEO: format conversion, metadata injection, compression.

Optimize image file(s) for web and SEO. Converts to WebP/AVIF, injects IPTC metadata, compresses, and generates responsive variants.
Tools used (in order of preference):

Metadata Injection (IPTC for Google Rich Results)
Google Images displays IPTC Creator, Credit Line, and Copyright in search results. This is NOT a ranking factor but improves rich result display and brand attribution.

IMPORTANT: WebP supports EXIF and XMP but NOT IPTC natively. For WebP files, use XMP fields instead of IPTC. exiftool handles this conversion automatically.
AI-Generated Images: DigitalSourceType (Merchant Center requirement)
For product images produced by generative AI, Google Merchant Center requires
IPTC DigitalSourceType: TrainedAlgorithmicMedia metadata. This is an
operational policy requirement, not a ranking factor — feeds missing this label
on AI-generated imagery can be disapproved.

When /seo images optimize is run on AI-generated assets, prompt the user to
confirm the source type and inject the matching IPTC value automatically.
For AI-generated product titles and descriptions, Google Merchant Center
also requires the AI-generated text to be separately specified and labeled in
the feed. This is enforced at the feed layer, not the page layer — flag this
in cross-reference with seo-ecommerce.
