competitor-tracking
appeeky/aso-skills
Monitor competitor app changes weekly—catch metadata shifts, keyword moves, rating trends, and new features before they impact your rankings.
What is competitor-tracking?
Competitor Tracking sets up ongoing surveillance of 3–5 rival apps, detecting metadata changes, keyword ranking shifts, rating trends, and feature launches on a recurring schedule. Use this when you need continuous competitive intelligence; for a one-time deep analysis, use competitor-analysis instead.
- Track metadata changes (title, subtitle, description, screenshots) weekly via Appeeky API
- Monitor keyword ranking gains and losses to spot optimization moves and capture opportunities
- Watch rating and review trends to identify user pain points and competitive vulnerabilities
- Detect chart position movements in your category to catch emerging threats
- Generate weekly competitive reports with change logs, opportunities, and action items
- Automate tracking via scripts or Claude/Cursor MCP for hands-off monitoring
How to install competitor-tracking
npx skills add https://github.com/appeeky/aso-skills --skill competitor-tracking- Appeeky API key (for automated tracking)
- List of 3–5 competitor app IDs (or ability to look them up via keyword search)
- Calendar reminder or script scheduler (for weekly runs)
How to use competitor-tracking
- 1.1. Identify your top 3–5 competitors and collect their App IDs using Appeeky keyword search or intelligence endpoints.
- 2.2. Choose tracking frequency (weekly recommended) and define what matters most: keywords, ratings, creative, or pricing.
- 3.3. Run weekly Appeeky API calls to fetch current metadata, keywords, ratings, and chart positions for each competitor.
- 4.4. Compare results to the previous week and document changes in the provided Weekly Competitive Report template.
- 5.5. Identify opportunities (keywords they dropped, rating vulnerabilities) and threats (keywords they're ranking for that you're not).
- 6.6. Take action: adjust ASA bids, update metadata, or trigger a full competitor-analysis if a major change is detected.
- 7.7. Repeat every Monday; escalate to deep analysis when a competitor changes title, jumps 10+ chart positions, or enters your top 10.
Use cases
- Weekly competitive report: every Monday, check if top 3 competitors changed titles, keywords, or ratings
- Catch keyword opportunities: detect when a competitor drops a shared keyword and claim it with ASA bids
- Spot feature gaps: notice when a competitor ships a new feature and prioritize your roadmap response
- Monitor rating threats: alert when a competitor's rating drops, creating a window to highlight your stability
- Trigger deep analysis: when a competitor jumps 10+ chart positions, run a full competitor-analysis skill
- App marketing managers running ASO campaigns
- Product managers tracking competitive feature velocity
- Growth teams optimizing keyword and chart positioning
- Indie app developers monitoring 2–3 key rivals on a budget
competitor-tracking FAQ
competitor-analysis is a one-time deep dive into positioning, gaps, and strategy. This skill runs weekly, tracking what changed and alerting you to respond. Use competitor-analysis when a major change is detected.
Manual is fine for small teams—set a Monday calendar reminder and run the Appeeky API calls yourself. For scale, use a bash script to diff weekly snapshots or ask Claude/Cursor via the Appeeky MCP.
Title changes signal repositioning. Run a full competitor-analysis on them immediately to understand their new strategy, then assess if you need to adjust your own positioning or keywords.
When a competitor drops a keyword or you notice they're not ranking for something relevant, use the keyword-research skill to validate search volume and difficulty, then bid on it with apple-search-ads.
This is an opportunity window. Highlight your rating in promotional materials and ASA creative while the gap is visible. Also check their recent reviews to understand the complaint—it may reveal a user pain point you can solve.

Setup: Define Your Watchlist
- Check for
app-marketing-context.md - Ask: Who are your top 3–5 competitors? (get App IDs if possible)
- Ask: How often do you want to review? (weekly recommended)
- Ask: What are you most concerned about? (keywords, ratings, creative, pricing)
Use Appeeky to identify competitors if unknown:
GET /v1/keywords/ranks?keyword=meditation&country=us&limit=10
GET /v1/apps/:id/intelligence # check competitors array
What to Track
Metadata Changes
Check weekly using Appeeky:
GET /v1/apps/:id # title, subtitle, description
Watch for:
- Title changes — new keyword being targeted, repositioning
- Subtitle changes — testing new hooks or keywords
- Description changes — messaging strategy shift (Google Play especially)
- Screenshot updates — new creative direction or A/B test winner shipped
Keyword Ranking Changes
GET /v1/apps/:id/keywords # their ranking keywords
GET /v1/keywords/ranks?keyword=[shared keyword] # who's ranking where
Watch for:
- Keywords they're newly ranking for (they optimized for this — should you?)
- Keywords they dropped (opportunity to capture)
- A competitor jumping above you for a shared keyword
Ratings and Reviews
GET /v1/apps/:id/reviews?sort=recent&limit=20
GET /v1/apps/:id # current rating
Watch for:
- Rating drop (they shipped a bad update — opportunity to highlight your stability)
- Surge of 1-stars around a specific complaint (user pain point you could solve)
- New positive reviews praising a feature you don't have
Chart Positions
GET /v1/market/movers?genre=[genre_id]&country=us
GET /v1/categories/:id/top?country=us&limit=25

- New competitor entering your space from a chart rise
Pricing and Paywall
Manually check every 4–6 weeks:
- Trial length changes
- Price changes (lower = aggressive growth; higher = LTV optimization)
- New paywall format or plans
