What is press-and-pr?
This skill helps indie developers and app teams secure press coverage through press releases, journalist pitching, and strategic media outreach. Use it when planning app launches, seeking media mentions, or building credibility through editorial features.
- Write and distribute press releases with newsworthy angles
- Identify and pitch journalists at target publications (TechCrunch, The Verge, 9to5Mac, MacStories, etc.)
- Build a press kit with app assets, founder bios, screenshots, and key stats
- Create embargo strategies for exclusive coverage on launch day
- Plan Product Hunt launches and Tier 3 community posts (Reddit, Hacker News, Indie Hackers)
- Develop story angles that make your app newsworthy (numbers, problem solved, unique data, David vs Goliath)

press-and-pr FAQ
Press covers stories, not apps. Find an angle: numbers ('100K downloads in 7 days'), problem solved ('solo dev built X because no tool did Y'), unique data, category creation, David vs Goliath, timely tie-in, or compelling founder story. Test it: can you explain it in one sentence that makes someone say 'interesting'?
Start with Tier 3 (Product Hunt, Reddit, Hacker News, Indie Hackers) for immediate visibility. Move to Tier 2 (app review blogs, niche newsletters, YouTube channels) for meaningful reach. Reserve Tier 1 (TechCrunch, The Verge, Wired, 9to5Mac, MacStories) for exclusives or major launches with strong angles.
Search the target publication for recent app reviews in your category, note the byline, check their Twitter/X for contact preferences, and use Hunter.io to guess their email (typically first@publication.com). Personalize each pitch—no mass blasts.
Host a presskit/ folder on your website with: app name and one-liner, 3 founder photos (high-res), app icon (1024×1024px), 5–10 screenshots, preview video (optional), 3-sentence bio, key stats, prior coverage, App Store link, website, and press contact email.
Press drives web referrals (tracked in App Store Connect), backlinks improve SEO, social proof ('As seen on') boosts conversion, coverage increases Apple editorial consideration, and articles get shared for organic discovery beyond the original publication.

What Makes a Story
Press doesn't cover apps — they cover stories. Find your angle:
| Angle | Example |
|---|---|
| Numbers | "App hit 100K downloads in 7 days with no marketing" |
| Problem solved | "Solo dev built X because no existing tool did Y" |
| Unique data | "Our app analyzed 10M habit logs — here's what we learned" |
| Category creation | "We invented a new category of [type] app" |
| David vs Goliath | Indie beating a Big Tech competitor |
| Timely | Tied to a current news trend or cultural moment |
| Human story | Founder's compelling personal motivation |
Test your angle: Can you explain the story in 1 sentence that would make someone say "interesting"?
