checkpoint

codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit

Mid-session save point: commit progress and write a handoff note before risky changes or task switches.

What is checkpoint?

Checkpoint creates a descriptive git commit and a brief handoff note (.claude/handoff.md) to bank progress mid-session without ending work. Use it before risky refactors, when switching tasks, or to preserve known-good state—then keep working. For full end-of-session ritual with learning extraction, use /wrap-up instead.

  • Stage and commit relevant changes with a descriptive message
  • Write a brief handoff note (.claude/handoff.md) summarizing completed work, pending tasks, and context
  • Exclude generated files, build artifacts, and secrets from commits
  • Preserve a checkpoint you can safely return to if a refactor fails
  • Keep the session active after saving—no end-of-session ritual

How to install checkpoint

npx skills add https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill checkpoint
Prerequisites
  • Git repository initialized in the project
  • Write access to .claude/ directory for handoff notes
Claude Code
Cursor
Windsurf
Cline

How to use checkpoint

  1. 1.Trigger with /checkpoint, 'checkpoint', 'save progress', 'commit and handoff', 'save state', 'pause here', or 'before a risky change'
  2. 2.Review git status and git diff to see staged and unstaged changes
  3. 3.Stage specific files relevant to the work (never git add -A)
  4. 4.Provide or confirm a descriptive commit message (use conventional prefixes: feat:, fix:, refactor:)
  5. 5.Claude creates the commit and writes .claude/handoff.md with Completed, Pending, Learned (if applicable), and Context sections
  6. 6.Resume work immediately after the checkpoint is saved

Use cases

Good for
  • Before attempting a risky refactor or destructive change to preserve known-good state
  • When switching to a different feature or task mid-session
  • After completing a logical unit of work to bank incremental progress
  • When a user explicitly requests 'checkpoint', 'save progress', 'save state', or 'pause here'
  • To create a recovery point before experimental changes without ending the session
Who it's for
  • Developers working on multi-step features or refactors
  • Teams using Claude Code or Cursor for extended coding sessions
  • Anyone needing to pause work safely and resume with full context
  • Developers practicing incremental commits and handoff documentation

checkpoint FAQ

What's the difference between /checkpoint and /wrap-up?

/checkpoint is a mid-session save that commits and writes a brief handoff note, then keeps working. /wrap-up is the end-of-session ritual that includes full handoff format plus learning extraction into MEMORY.md.

Can I checkpoint if there are no changes to commit?

Yes. If there is nothing to commit, the handoff note is still updated with current context and status, and you can continue working.

Should I use git add -A when staging changes?

No. Always stage specific files selectively. Exclude generated files, build artifacts, secrets (.env, credentials), and other non-essential changes.

Can I amend a previous commit instead of creating a new one?

No. Checkpoint always creates a new commit so you have a clear recovery point you can return to if needed.

What should I include in the handoff note?

Include Completed (what's done), Pending (next steps with specifics), Learned (only if something non-obvious surfaced), and Context (current branch and commit hash).

/checkpoint

What

A quick mid-session save that banks the known-good state in two moves:

  1. Descriptive git commit — stage relevant changes and commit with a message that summarizes the work.
  2. Brief handoff note — write .claude/handoff.md so a resumed session (or you, after a botched refactor) knows exactly where things stand.

Checkpoint is the mid-session save; /wrap-up is the end-of-session ritual. Checkpoint commits and jots a note, then keeps working. Wrap-up does the full handoff plus learning extraction into MEMORY.md.

When

  • Before a risky refactor or destructive change — checkpoint the known-good state
  • When switching to a different task or feature mid-session
  • After completing a logical unit of work — bank it
  • User says "checkpoint", "save progress", "save state", "pause here"
  • If the session is actually ending, use /wrap-up for the full ritual

How

  1. Assess state — git status and git diff to see staged and unstaged changes.
  2. Stage changes — Stage specific files; never git add -A. Exclude generated files, build artifacts, and secrets (.env, credentials).
  3. Commit — Descriptive message following the repo's commit style (conventional prefixes: feat:, fix:, refactor:). New commit, never amend. If there is nothing to commit, skip to the handoff.
  4. Write handoff note — .claude/handoff.md, same format as /wrap-up but abbreviated: Completed, Pending (with specific next steps), Learned (only if something non-obvious surfaced), and Context (branch + commit hash). One file, always overwritten.
  5. Confirm — Report the commit hash and the handoff summary, then resume work.

Safety Rules

  • Never push, force-push, or touch remote branches
  • Never commit secrets
  • Never amend — a checkpoint is a new commit you can return to
  • No changes to commit? Update the handoff only

Example

User: /checkpoint — about to try the EF Core split-query refactor

Claude: 3 files modified, 1 new.

Commit a1b2c3d: "feat: add CreateOrder validation with FluentValidation"
  - src/Orders/Features/CreateOrder.cs
  - src/Orders/Features/CreateOrderValidator.cs (new)
  - tests/Orders.Tests/Features/CreateOrderTests.cs

  Handoff updated (.claude/handoff.md):
  ## Completed
  - [x] CreateOrder validation + 3 test scenarios
  ## Pending
  - [ ] Split-query refactor in GetOrderDetails (about to attempt)
  ## Context
  - Branch: feature/order-validation | Checkpoint: a1b2c3d

Checkpoint saved — safe to proceed with the risky refactor.
