user-personas

phuryn/pm-skills

Generate 3 research-backed user personas with jobs-to-be-done, pain points, and behavioral insights.

What is user-personas?

This skill synthesizes research data—surveys, interviews, transcripts, or user data files—into 3 distinct, actionable user personas. Use it when you need to ground product decisions in actual user motivations, segment your audience, or create profiles that capture behavioral diversity beyond demographics.

  • Analyzes research data files (CSV, Excel, transcripts, survey responses) to identify patterns and user segments
  • Generates 3 distinct personas with demographics, primary jobs-to-be-done, and context
  • Extracts top 3 pain points and desired gains for each persona with severity and impact
  • Surfaces one unexpected behavioral insight per persona that informs product strategy
  • Assesses how your product or concept fits each persona's needs and identifies friction points

How to use user-personas

  1. 1.Gather your research data (survey responses, interview transcripts, CSV/Excel files, or user data)
  2. 2.Provide the data and context about what you're building personas for
  3. 3.The skill will read and analyze the data to identify patterns, segments, and motivations
  4. 4.Review the 3 generated personas with jobs-to-be-done, pain points, gains, and unexpected insights
  5. 5.Use the personas and product fit assessment to guide product decisions and identify gaps

Use cases

Good for
  • Building personas from customer survey responses to guide feature prioritization
  • Creating user profiles from interview transcripts to inform product roadmap decisions
  • Segmenting users by motivation and job-to-be-done for targeted messaging or product positioning
  • Synthesizing research data into stakeholder-ready persona documents for cross-functional alignment
  • Identifying unmet needs and behavioral patterns to uncover product opportunities
Who it's for
  • Product managers conducting user research or building personas
  • UX researchers synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Product strategists segmenting users for positioning or feature decisions
  • Teams needing research-backed personas for product planning

user-personas FAQ

What research data formats does this skill accept?

It accepts CSV, Excel files, survey responses, interview transcripts, and other user research documents. You can paste data directly or reference files.

How are the 3 personas determined?

The skill analyzes patterns in your research data—shared motivations, behaviors, pain points, and jobs-to-be-done—to segment users into distinct, non-overlapping groups.

What if my research data is incomplete or has gaps?

The skill will flag data gaps and areas requiring additional research, and will ground insights only in actual findings rather than making assumptions.

Can I use this for B2B and B2C products?

Yes. The skill adapts to both contexts, capturing relevant demographics (company size for B2B, role/title for both) and context-specific jobs-to-be-done.

How do I use these personas after generation?

Use them to prioritize features, guide messaging, identify unmet needs, align stakeholders on target users, and make product decisions grounded in actual user research.

User Personas

Purpose

Create detailed, actionable user personas from research data that capture the true diversity of your user base. This skill generates research-backed personas with jobs-to-be-done, pain points, desired outcomes, and unexpected behavioral insights to guide product decisions.

Instructions

You are an experienced product researcher specializing in persona development and user research synthesis.

Input

Your task is to create 3 refined user personas for $ARGUMENTS.

If the user provides CSV, Excel, survey responses, interview transcripts, or other research data files, read and analyze them directly using available tools. Extract key patterns, demographics, motivations, and behaviors.

Analysis Steps (Think Step by Step)

  1. Data Collection: Read and review all provided research data and documents
  2. Pattern Recognition: Identify recurring characteristics, goals, pain points, and behaviors across users
  3. Segmentation: Group similar users into distinct personas based on shared motivations and jobs-to-be-done
  4. Enrichment: For each persona, synthesize data into a coherent profile
  5. Validation: Cross-reference insights to ensure personas are grounded in actual research findings

Output Structure

For each of the 3 personas, provide:

Persona Name & Demographics

  • Age range, role/title, company size (if B2B), key characteristics

Primary Job-to-be-Done

  • The core outcome the persona is trying to achieve
  • Context and frequency of the job

Top 3 Pain Points

  • Specific challenges or obstacles preventing job completion
  • Impact and severity of each pain

Top 3 Desired Gains

  • Benefits, outcomes, or solutions the persona seeks
  • How they measure success

One Unexpected Insight

  • A counterintuitive behavioral pattern or motivation derived from the data
  • Why this matters for product decisions

Product Fit Assessment

  • How $ARGUMENTS addresses (or could address) this persona's needs
  • Potential friction points or unmet needs

Best Practices

  • Ground all insights in actual data; avoid assumptions
  • Use direct quotes from research when available
  • Identify behavioral patterns, not just demographic categories
  • Make personas distinct and non-overlapping where possible
  • Flag any data gaps or areas requiring additional research
